Q. Recently, I have become unhappy in my current position and don't feel a sense of accomplishment. I'm thinking about moving on to a new opportunity but don't want to do anything hasty. What should I consider before making a final decision?A. What an excellent question! Millions of employees feel a lack of motivation and achievement from their job. Although you are one of the many, I suggest taking some time to evaluate yourself and your situation before making any drastic moves. Before leaving your job, analyze whether the discontent is from your specific job or from your chosen career. I don't recommend changing careers because you have been dissatisfied with a particular company or boss. On the other hand, you don't want to continuously change jobs when you may not be suited for your current career. Start by asking yourself what is it that you truly want to do for the rest of your life. If you already know your present career is the perfect fit, begin by revamping your résumé, start networking and be proactive in searching for opportunities with a company that will better suit your individual needs and goals. On the flip side, if you cannot determine a quick answer to this question, begin a self assessment process to determine alternative careers that are a better match for your personal interests, skills and values. There are numerous assessment quizzes online which will assist you in evaluating yourself and a new career. After careful consideration, you will feel more confident with your final decision and the direction you ultimately take.
